The Lady Chablis, the renowned Savannah drag performer who stole scenes in the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, has passed away surrounded by family and friends reports the Savannah Morning News.

Lady Chablis—or "The Doll" as she was known as—was featured in John Berendt's Midnight novel and film adaptation. After her appearance in the film she rose to national fame and was interviewed on Good Morning America and Oprah. In 1996 she released her autobiography, Hiding My Candy.

Club One, where she performed for years, paid tribute to her on their Facebook page this morning:

She was Club One’s very first entertainer, officiating our grand opening in 1988, and paving the way for female impersonation in Savannah. No one, however, could outshine the Grand Empress herself.

Lady Chablis was a performer, but also gave back to the community. She worked with the American Diabetes Association, donating thousands of dollars raised by her performances to the cause.

She is survived by her sister, Cynthia.
