Divas to the Rescue! How Your Faves Are Giving Back During the Pandemic

Forget model U.N. Together, these grandes dames can do anything.

Thank god for our divas. In this trying and terrifying time, these superwomen are doing what the government can't: providing comfort and effective leadership.

A crisis can bring out the best in celebrities, giving them a purpose aside from their own self-interest, and reminding us why we gave them so much of our money in the first place. Now our grandes dames of pop culture are donating their time, their talent, and their own dollaaaaarrrsssssss to offer some relief from this unrelenting coronavirus pandemic.

Here, we salute the fabulous ladies (and one sir) who are saving us from the ineptitude of our current presidency and putting a song in our hearts.

Lady Gaga

Oscar winner and Chromatica ambassador Lady Gaga teamed with advocacy group Global Citizen to raise $35 million for the World Health Organization, and will celebrate health-care workers on the frontlines of the pandemic battle with an all-star telecast event streaming across multiple platforms. It will feature a who's who of talent, from Sir Paul McCartney to Dame Kacey Musgraves.

Rihanna

Rihanna's charity, the Clara Lionel Foundation, donated $5 million to aid in coronavirus relief efforts in her native Barbados and around the world. In addition, she and Mr. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Jay-Z, each donated $1 million through their respective foundations to "support undocumented workers, the children of frontline health workers and first responders, and incarcerated, elderly, and homeless populations in New York City and Los Angeles."

Dolly Parton

While Dolly may shy away from calling herself a diva, who else has a fucking theme park dedicated to herself? Dolly brought that BDE with her $1 million donation to Vanderbilt University towards the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. And to help cure some of our existential dread, she will also be reading bedtime stories on YouTube with her Goodnight With Dolly series, which airs once a week for 10 weeks. Can't wait to hear The Little Engine That Could Easily Take My Man.

Elton John

And you can tell everybody… that they can count on this OG diva to help out in hard times. Once again, Sir Elton does not disappoint, having launched a $1 million COVID-19 emergency fund through his Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised more than $600 million in its fight to eradicate AIDS since he founded it in 1993. John was also one of the many celebs who turned up for the iHeart Living Room Concert for America, which raised $8 million for coronavirus relief efforts.

Mariah Carey

Speaking of iHeart, Mimi also performed, emancipating the high notes for an at-home rendition of the classic, eternally soothing bop "Always Be My Baby." She also schooled us on how to protect ourselves from this damn thing, delivering an adorable TikTok video of her washing her hands to the Ol' Dirty Bastard mix of "Fantasy" with Dem Babies™, who are now more like Dem Grown-Ass Kids™.

Ciara

Chanteuse and unparalleled hoofer Ciara and her husband, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, are donating one million meals to the Food Lifeline, which provides nutritious dishes to the food-insecure in Western Washington state. So if you're in Seattle and looking for the goodies, look no further.

Oprah

Oprah may not be much of a singer—barring "Run On," the theme song from Season 13 of her legendary talk show—but if anyone has earned the moniker of "Diva Best Believa," it's the erstwhile Queen of Daytime. Mama O donated $10 million overall to cities across the country and in areas where she grew up, including $1 million toward America's Food Fund to alleviate food insecurity. Next thing you know, she'll be telling us to look under our couches and we'll be wondering how Oprah snuck a Prius in there. The answer: She's fucking Oprah.
