Lady Gaga Got Julie Andrews' Blessing Before Performing "Sound Of Music" At The Oscars
You can't say that Gaga isn't a true lady: Two weeks before her earthshattering Sound of Music medley at the Academy Awards, Mother Monster called up the O.G. Maria—Julie Andrews— to get the icon's approval for the 50th anniversary performance.
In an interview with People, Andrews says she was impressed by Gaga's gesture. "She called me about 10 days before and she said, 'I just want to talk to you and make sure I don't offend. That what I'm doing is okay with you.' It was very generous of her."
While there's no doubt the future bride of Chicago Fire stud Taylor Kinney has a serious set of pipes, Andrews noted how the pop star (unsurprisingly) went the extra mile to slay the 37.3 million gay men, women and reluctant straight guys watching the ceremony around the world.
"She said she'd been working so hard and she was singing everything in my keys," Andrews told the magazine. "I said, 'Why? They're very high, even for me.' And she said, 'Because I wanted to honor you, so I did them in your keys.' That seemed like going one step beyond any place she needed to go."
Unfortunately, we'll never get a Cheek to Cheek-style duets album between Mother Monster and Mary Poppins, as Andrews singing voice was irreparably damaged during a throat operation.
Thank the gay gods we got to see this sweet comeback from the Gaga we know and love.
