Nicole Dennis-Benn, Rabih Alameddine, “Wuvable Oaf,” “Barbecue/Bootycandy” Winners At 2017 Lambda Literary Awards

LGBT literary organization Lambda Literary announced the winners of its 29th annual Lambda Literary Awards last night in a ceremony in New York hosted by Justin Vivian Bond.

“Authors putting words in order artfully and with thought is a revolutionary thing in the climate we are living in,” said Bond, whose memoir Tango: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels, came out in 2011.

Honorees included Nicole Dennis-Benn, who took home Best Lesbian Fiction for her debut novel Here Comes the Sun, and Rabih Alameddine, who won the Best Gay Fiction award for The Angel of History. Illustrator Ed Luce was honored for the graphic novel Wuvable Oaf: Blood & Metal, while Robert O’Hara won Best LGBT Drama category for Barbecue/Bootycandy, a series of interconnected skits about growing up black and gay in America.

Children’s author Jacqueline Woodson (Brown Girl Dreaming, After Tupac and D Foster) and Jeanette Winterson (Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit) both received lifetime achievement honors.

Presenters included comedian Tig Notaro, performance artist Taylor Mac, writer Eileen Myles and veteran activist Cleve Jones.
