Laverne Cox's "Doubt" Character Will Get Groundbreaking TV Romance

"That felt revolutionary. That felt groundbreaking."

Laverne Cox is making history as the first transgender actor to land a regular series role, on CBS' Doubt.

Talking with AOL Build this week, she revealed her character, Cameron Wirth, will also have a romantic life—another first for TV.

"I thought, 'Okay, this is something I’ve never seen on TV,'" said Cox. "I hadn’t personally seen a trans woman be pursued by a straight-identified man on national television knowing that she’s transgender."

"That felt revolutionary, that felt groundbreaking," she added. "It was really exciting for me as an actress who’s always wanted to see that."

The Orange is the New Black star says Doubt's writers discussed character arcs with all the regulars and asked Cox to provide input from some of her own dating experiences as a trans woman.

"I relished the opportunity...it made me feel valued, deeply valued, that my voice was valued not only as an actress, but as someone who had life experience to contribute," she said. "It was really moving for me to read the scripts and see how they incorporated some of my ideas."
