Laverne Cox Blesses Mila Jam’s “Bruised” Video, Dedicated to Murdered Trans Women

The video also features Mj Rodriguez and Yuhua Hamasaki.

Mila Jam is bruised, not broken.

The 29-year-old New York singer-songwriter has released a new EP, Bruised, that explores violence against women.

The music video for the EP's title track, which shows the cycle of abuse perpetuated by straight-identifying men against transgender women, starts with a sobering message: "This is dedicated to every woman, specifically TransWomen, who have lost their lives at the hands of their abusers."

“Many trans women are not allowed to come out of it on the other side without even being able to speak up about the abuse and the violence because girls are being murdered,” the trans artist tells Billboard. “This is just another layer to [the #MeToo movement], where your voice isn't even being heard, and you're silenced because of death.”

Directed and produced by Jono Freedrix and Eric Miclette, the "Bruised" video features Jam fighting to survive alongside an angelic Laverne Cox, Pose star Mj Rodriguez, RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Yuhua Hamasaki, and Ryan Preimesberger as an abusive lover.

Jam thanked Cox on Instagram "for being the Angel of Hope." She added, "Reverence to the spirits no longer here physically."

The performer celebrated her EP and video earlier this week with a release party at New York's Cutting Room. Rodriguez, Danielle Brooks, Lady Bunny, Michael Blume, and Alok Vaid-Menon were among the guests.

"I am floating in a revelrous cloud of realization," Jam wrote on social media the next day. "That, what I do has its space and time. That I am not a being living my life in vain. That my purpose is a calling and I strive for greatness every single day. This is my blessing and testimony."
