Laverne Cox Gives Carey Mulligan Tough Love in “Promising Young Woman”

The actress and transgender activist appears in the star-studded black comedy, out Christmas Day.

The Orange Is the New Black alum and pioneering transgender activist appears alongside Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman, an upcoming black comedy from Killing Eve director Emerald Fennell. In an exclusive new clip from the film, Cox’s character, Gail, tries to get real with Mulligan’s Cassie about her not-so-promising future while they’re behind the counter of their coffeeshop job. This comes at the expense of a potential customer, who hightails it after it becomes clear that Gail and Cassie are preoccupied.

Cox and Mulligan aren’t the only familiar faces in Promising Young Woman. The movie’s stacked cast includes Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, and Jennifer Coolidge, among others.

Its full description reads, “Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman… until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: She’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night.
