Laverne Cox Is A Psychic With A Heart Of Gold In The New ABC Pilot “Spirited”

Elizabeth Banks is producing.

Laverne Cox goes from strength to strength: Earlier this week, the Orange is the New Black star was unveiled as one of the faces of BeyoncĂ©’s Ivy Park clothing line. Now Variety is reporting that ABC has greenlighted a pilot for her upcoming series, Spirited.

In the one-hour drama, Cox plays a fake psychic who discovers she really can communicate with the dead. So she decides to mend her con-artist ways and start using her powers for good.

We’re getting a slight Oda Mae Brown vibe.

The show is being produced by Elizabeth Banks, who had previously tapped Cox to star in the buddy cop show The Trustee, about a stubborn police detective (Meaghan Rath) and an ex-con (Cox). When that series failed to materialize, Spirited came into view.

Most recently Cox appeared on CBS’ short-lived legal drama Doubt, alongside Katherine Heigl, DulĂ© Hill, and Elliott Gould.

Dan Avery is a writer-editor who focuses on culture, breaking news and LGBT rights. His work has appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Advocate and elsewhere.
