Laverne Cox to Light Up Empire State Building for #spiritday

lavernepurpleActress and trans activist Laverne Cox has a great gig this October 16th! In honor of Spirit Day the Emmy-nominated Orange is the New Black star will light the iconic Empire State Building in glorious, spirited purple. This year marks the first time that the New York landmark has taken a stand against bullying and gone purple for Spirit Day.

Says GLAAD Pres. Sarah Kate Ellis, “By recognizing National Bullying Prevention Month and lighting in purple for Spirit Day, the world’s most famous office building is supporting countless kids across the world. At a time when eight in 10 LGBT youth are harassed at school, it’s critical that we let them know it’s okay to be who you are.”

Laverne Cox has her own experiences with harassment. “Bullying was an unfortunate part of my daily reality growing up in Alabama. I am committed to doing what I can so that young people don’t have to go through what I did.”

Laverne will be accompanied at the lighting ceremony by representatives from GLAAD and the trans individuals featured in the upcoming documentary Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word.

The T Word premieres on both MTV and Logo TV on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 7pm ET/PT. This documentary is part of MTV’s “Look Different” campaign, is produced and hosted by Cox and profiles seven diverse transgender youth from across America.

It’s not too late to take the Spirit Day pledge and go purple yourself next Thursday! Visit glaad.org/spiritday for more information on how to stand against anti-LGBT bullying.
