Legendary Wigstock Returns As An NYC Cruise

Drags at sea.

For years Wigstock served as the ultimate drag party, turning out performances from legendary artists like Lypsinka, Joey Arias, Sherry Vine, Ffloyd, Leigh Bowery, and, of course RuPaul.

Under the guidance of Lady Bunny, the annual show started out in 1984 at Tompkins Square Park and, as it grew, moved to Union Square and then the Hudson piers. In 1995 Wigstock the Movie (one of our favorite docs ever) brought the event—and drag—to a larger audience.

What made Wigstock so special—in addition to its sheer size and scale—was how it provided a platform to so many different kinds of drag—punk rock, performance art, high camp, celebrity impersonation and more.

Eventually, though, production costs made Wigstock prohibitively expensive—it was folded into the Howl Festival in 2002, and finally ended in 2005.

Now the iconic dragfest is back as a cruise along the Hudson, in honor of Bunny's birthday. (Just don't ask how old she is.)

"I got wind of a new Wigstock party in South Africa—in addition to other annual events in Tel Aviv, Sweden and Melbourne, Australia," Bunny explains. "And I had to ask myself: 'Why should everyone else have all the fun?' and 'How much should I sue for?'"

She says the sea tea cruise will "test the waters" for bigger Wigstock events in the future.

"We and are doing everything we can to make this a memorable event for both those who've attended previous Wigstock festivals to those who never made it."

Performers—most of whom are Wigstock veterans—include Flotilla DeBarge, Linda Simpson, Sweetie, Princess Diandra, FFloyd and Sugga Pie Koko—with Johnny Dynell and Ed Bailey in the DJ booth.

The Drag U dean does have one word of warning: "PLEASE WEAR SOMEWHAT SENSIBLE HEELS. Granny Bunny will have on her sturdy lucite wedges."

Wigstock: The Cruise sets sail on Sunday, August 17, at 6pm. Order tickets here.
