Lena Dunham Matching $50,000 In Donations To Detroit LGBT Center

Dunham's sibling, Grace, is gender-nonconforming.

Lena Dunham has pledged to match donations to a Detroit LGBT homeless youth center, up to $50,000. The Girls creator urged her Twitter followers to give money to the Ruth Ellis Center last week, after the Trump administration repealed federal guidance for trans students.

“Let's fight hate & ignorance with love for trans teens, who are already facing steep odds and who need our support to grow and THRIVE,” Dunham wrote to her 5 million followers.

On Wednesday, the Departments of Education and Justice revoked 2016 guidance sent to schools by the Obama administration advising them to treat trans students with dignity and respect.

Following that announcement, Trans Lifeline, a national support network, told NBC News that its hotline has been flooded with calls.

The issue is a personal one for Dunham: Her sibling, Grace, came out as gender nonconforming after struggled with labeling. The 25-year-old initially identified as a lesbian before realizing that neither gender category fits quite right.

“I’m not a woman, but I’m not a man,” said the younger Dunham.

Located in Highland Park, the Ruth Ellis Center is one of only four organizations in the U.S. that provides shelter and services to at-risk LGBT youth. Ellis, who died in 2000, offered her house as a safe haven for queer people of color in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, when they had few other spaces to call home.

Girls lampoons privileged Brooklyn millennials, but Dunham's character, Hannah Horvath, originally hails from Michigan. The series is currently in its sixth and final season on HBO.
