Out director–producer Lena Waithe has joined forces with MTV for its new #SaveOurMoms campaign.

This Sunday, May 12, is Mother's Day, and though the holiday is cause to celebrate for many of us, it's also a reminder of the staggering rates of maternal mortality for women in the United States. Every day, 2-3 American women die from pregnancy-related complications—and those numbers have more than doubled in the past 30 years.

It's also an issue that disproportionately affects women of color in America, specifically black women. But more than half of these deaths are preventable—and it's time for this narrative to change.

To bring this issue to the forefront, Waithe, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, and Every Mother Counts worked with MTV to create a PSA.
