Lesbians Paint House Rainbow Colors to Annoy Homophobic Neighbors

The Pennsylvania couple say they've endured years of anti-gay harassment.

A married lesbian couple has painted their Pennsylvania home like a Pride flag after allegedly enduring years of homophobic slurs from their neighbors, Pittsburgh's WTAE reports.

Lisa Licata and Sherry Lau moved into the Penn Hills neighborhood five years ago. After hearing neighbor Ron Makay make a bigoted comment, they tried to avoid conflict by telling him they were mother and daughter. When the truth came out a year later, the couple says that Makay and his wife, Iolanda Wieczorkowki, began calling them anti-gay slurs like "homos" and "dykes."

"It seemed to change when they found out I’m married to a woman and I’m gay," says Lau.

Lau and Licata also claim Makay shot their dog with a BB gun. Penn Hills Police recently charged Makay with animal cruelty and discharging an air rifle.

In response to their neighbors' homophobic behavior, Licata and Lau erected a fence two years ago and painted it the colors of the LGBTQ Pride flag. When the harassment continued, the couple extended the rainbow up the side of their house.

"When he protested against the fence being rainbow, that’s when we decided let’s do the house," Licata explains.

The couple says they now plan to paint their entire house in rainbow colors.

"This is the 21st century, you know," Lau says. "We live here, we’re not moving. My family accepts us, our friends accept us. If you don’t like it, just live your life, leave us alone and everything’s cool."

"I don’t want to be friends," Licata says. "I just want to be left alone. I just want it to stop."

Neither Makay nor Wieczorkowki would make a public statement about the dispute or alleged gay slurs. Makay's attorney, however, says his client did not shoot the dog and looks forward to his day in court.
