A young lesbian couple in Limerick, Ireland, was left bleeding and unconscious after being beaten by two men hurling anti-gay slurs.

Roisin Prendergast, 20, and Ciara Murphy, 17, were on Cruises Street in Limerick earlier this month when two men began "firing homophobic slurs" at the couple.

"We had literally left our apartment only minutes before when these two grown men started shouting abuse at us about being lesbians," Prendergast told The Irish Independent. "We shouted back, as we are used to this kind of abuse, but then they walked back towards us and started shoving us roughly."

The encounter escalated quickly when the two men—described as in their 20s and well-dressed, "as if coming back from a night out"—pushed the girls to the ground and began kneeing and kicking them, and stepping on their chests.

The attackers took the girls' hats and left after about ten minutes. "We thought it was over," said Prendergast. "Then one guy came back, threw Ciara against a shop window and ripped up her hat in front of her."

The police are reviewing security footage of the area but say video of the incident is off too poor quality to be of much help.

Prendergast wrote on Facebook:

I know our bruises will heal, I know we will be okay but this is not something I am going to let go.

Watching someone you love getting hurt while you yourself are getting hurt is not something anyone should ever have to endure straight or gay. This to me was a hate crime.

I am finished crying, today starts the first of many actions which will be taken to get justice.
