Lesbian Couple Wed After 72 Years Together

Vivian Boyack and Alice "Nonie" Dubes might have had the longest engagement on record: Before tying the knot on Saturday, they'd been together 72 years.

"This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago," the Rev. Linda Hunsaker said during the intimate ceremony at First Christian Church in Davenport, Iowa. (The Hawkeye State began recognizing same-sex marriage in 2009.)

Dubes, 90, and Boyack, 91, met as youngsters in their hometown of Yale, Iowa. In 1947 they moved to Davenport, where Dubes worked in accounting and Boyack taught school.

Over the years, they've traveled to all fifty states and all the provinces of Canada. "We've had a good time," said Dubes.

Boyack admitted a lot of love and work goes into keeping a relationship alive for eight decades, but insists its never too late to start a new chapter in your life.

"I've known these two women all my life," said wedding guest Jerry Yeast, 73,  who got to know the couple when he did yard work for them as a teenager. "And I can tell you, they are special."
