The film was also a frontrunner for the Palm d’Or, the biggest prize at Cannes, but that honor went to Jacques Audiard’s Dheepa.  Mara shared the Best Actress prize for Carol with Emmanuelle Bercot, who won for her work in Mon Roi.

An adaptation of  Patricia Highsmith's novel The Price of Salt , the film charts the growing relationship between a young department store clerk, (Mara) and a disenchanted wife (Blanchett) in 1950s New York.

The Queer Palm’s jury noted that Carol was one of the few overtly LGBT films at Cannes this year, and gave special recognition to The Lobster, a fable starring Colin Farrell, John C. Reilly and Rachel Weisz about people who are turned into animals if they fail to find a mate in 45 days.

Though it's not specifically gay, the jury also praised The Lobster, for "ridiculing absurd social norms and conventions related to sexual relations."

Carol comes to theaters January 21, 2016.
