Lesbian Mayor Christens Harvey Milk Boulevard In Salt Lake City

“I am where I am because of people like Harvey."

Salt Lake City mayor Jackie Biskupski honored gay activist Harvey Milk on Friday by putting up a street sign with his name downtown.

“I am where I am because of people like Harvey,” said Biskupski, who made history last November when she became the first out lesbian elected into her position.

Equality Utah and LGBT activists from around the city first proposed changing the street name, which was formerly "900 South," back in October, and the group raised all of the money needed for the new signs.

Then in April, a unanimous vote by the Salt Lake City Council made the decision to change the name of the street official.

"Harvey Milk imagined a brave world where everybody — everybody — had value and civil rights," said Salt Lake City councilman Stan Penfold, who proposed the change. "I like to imagine that world, too."

Tyler Glenn, the gay Mormon lead singer of Neon Trees, performed on Saturday at a celebration for the new street signs.
