Lesbian Memoir "Fun Home" Wins Best Musical At 2015 Tony Awards. See The Full List Of Winners

It's not that unusual for a musical with gay themes to win a Tony Award—Kinky Boots, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, La Gage aux Folles and Falsettos have all done it.

But the win for Best Musical tonight at the Tony Awards by "Fun Home" is groundbreaking in that it's the first mainstream Broadway musical with a lesbian protagonist—and not a single drag queen in sight.

Fun Home, based on the graphic memoir by cartoonist Alison Bechdel about her relationship with her closeted father, also took home Tonys for Best Director for Sam Gold, Best Original Score for Lisa Tesori and Lisa Kron, and Best Actor in a Musical for Michael Cerveris.

In accepting the award, Cerveris  said he hoped the Supreme Court ruled on the side of equality later this month.

Other big winners at the 2015 Tony Award include Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The King and I, and The Audience.
