Twitter Is Totally Freaking Out Over This “Lesbian Moon Lobster”

“Let the lesbian moon lobster return to the sea—she controls the tides."

A newly-discovered crustacean has been dubbed a “lesbian moon lobster” and Twitter users can’t seem get enough of her.

Fisherman Alex Todd recently posted a photo of the rare, translucent lobster after it came up in his catch: “This lobster probably has a genetic condition called Leucism,” Todd explained, “which isn’t a total loss of pigment (which would make it an albino) but is instead a partial loss. This is why you can still see some hints of blue on the shell and color on the eyes.”

On Friday, ABC ran a story on the lobster, in which Todd revealed he put her back in the ocean because she appeared to be carrying eggs.

When the story hit Twitter, user Eliza Clark retweeted it, deciding the rare shellfish was gay. “Let the lesbian moon lobster return to the sea, she controls the tides.”

Her assessment quickly went viral, receiving more than 307,000 likes and 94,000 retweets.

“Yeah, no, that is 10000000% a nymph of the sea,” one user concurred. “DO NOT invoke their wrath. Smart move, Fisher Man.”

“She’s gorgeous,” wrote another. “A lobster made of opal and moonlight.”

“My true god I have found her!” added a third.

Unsurprisingly, some haters asserted the she-lobster wasn’t sapphic at all.

“Why is the lobster a lesbian tho?” wrote one user.

“She was marked to carry eggs that’s why they put it back,” added another, “Definitely not lesbian.”

“The ocean is gay,” one user clarified. “Straight people aren’t allowed to swim in it ever. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.”

Now, the lesbian moon lobster even has her own Twitter account.

Which (spoiler alert) was made by Clark’s boyfriend to clap (claw?) back at the haters

“I HAVE A CONFESSION,” he tweeted from the Lesbian Moon Lobster account. “I’m not actually a lobster. I’m the boyfriend of the person who did the original viral tweet. I started this to troll homophobes who got genuinely annoyed at the thought a lobster might not be straight. #HomophobesAreIdiots”

“I love my bisexual partner,” he added. “I respect my LGBT friends. Donate to LGBT charities if you’re lucky enough to afford it. #EqualityAndLove.”

Keep on swimming, sweet lesbian moon lobster, and keep on tweeting.

I believe that true, well-told stories have the power to change the world for good. I also love a good listicle.
