Lesbian Police Chief Running For Sheriff In South Carolina Suspended

"There was nothing random about it," says one town official.

Crystal Moore, an openly gay police chief who is running for sheriff, has been suspended from her position.

It is the second time Moore has been removed from the post: Earl Bullard, the mayor of Latta, South Carolina, fired Moore in 2014. She was reinstated after an investigation proved she was wrongly terminated, according to SC Now.

In a phone conversation that was recorded at that time, Bullard called Moore’s lifestyle "questionable," and said he’d rather have a drunk watch a child than a lesbian. But he insists the latest action is unrelated to her sexuality.

It was the town council's decision to suspend Moore, not Bullard's. And while the cause has not been disclosed, Town Administrator Jarett Taylor said "there was nothing random about it."

Moore is running for the sheriff's seat against incumbent sheriff Major Hulon and has collected more than 1,500 signatures required for her candidacy.

“I’ve got no problem with how she lives her life as long as she does her job right,” said resident Mary Odell. “But I think she’s going to have an uphill fight. There are a lot of people who will hold that against her, but not say a thing out loud.”

Assistant Police Chief Derrick Cartwright will act as police chief in the interim.
