Her Father Wouldn't Walk Her Down The Aisle, So This Lesbian Banker's Boss Did The Honors

"We cried because we never thought we would make it this far."

When a Taiwanese woman named Jennifer recently married her girlfriend of 11 years, she would have loved to have had all of her family by her side. But when her homophobic father refused to walk her down the aisle, she found support in an unexpected place—the CEO of the bank that employs her.

Mashable has shared a video released by HSBC Taiwan that highlights the unique story of its employee and her fiancée, Sam, and how the rejection from her family led to her coworkers stepping up for her on her big day.

"My parents are strongly against it," Jennifer said about her relationship. "Whenever my father sees Sam, he will push her out and tell her to get lost."

The bride admitted that she brought that feeling of rejection into her career, worrying about coming out at work for fear of losing clients. Instead, she found nothing but support from her coworkers, and a surprise father figure in Li.

"CEO John was willing to walk me down the aisle, [he even] told us not to be nervous and to walk slowly," she shared.

Since same-sex marriage is still illegal in Taiwan, the wedding wasn't legally binding, but Jennifer is hopeful that the story of her supportive work experience will help other gay couples push through negative family experiences.

"This wedding is really for the LGBTQ community," she said. "We hope our actions will encourage people and create respect among different communities."
