LGBT Stories Dominate 2016 List Of Most Banned Books

The list was compiled by the American Library Association.

Nearly half of the books on this year's most-banned list contained LGBT themes, according to the American Library Association (ALA).

Every year, the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom collects reports from libraries, schools and the media on attempts made to ban certain books from their communities.

The OIF then compiles the reports and puts together a list of the nation's most-banned books in order to start a conversation about censorship.

Elements that can send a book to a banned list include overt sexuality, strong language, drug references and, unsurprisingly, LGBT themes.

Ranking number three on this year's list is I Am Jazz, which details the real-life experiences of teen trans advocate Jazz Jennings. In addition to sharing her story, the book serves as an educational tool for kids and parents alike.

Number four on the list is Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin, which also features a young trans student coming to terms with their identity.

Out artist Alison Bechdel's critically-acclaimed graphic novel Fun Home came in at number seven for its "graphic imagery" and Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan rounded out the list for condoning not only homosexuality, but also "public displays of affection."

"This list is not scientifically compiled," the ALA wrote in a statement. "Rather, it is a snapshot of the reports we receive every day."

"Our goal is not to focus on the numbers, but to educate the community that censorship is still a very serious problem," it continued. "Even with all of our efforts to follow up and provide support, surveys indicate that up to 85% of book challenges receive no media attention and remain unreported."
