New Video Series Shares The Stories Of LGBT Immigrants

The videos explore issues of race, love, gender identity and the immigrant experience.

Together with the Brooklyn Community Pride Center, LGBTQ rights organization Immigration Equality is launching the New Americans Project, an initiative to collect and share the stories of gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer and trans immigrants.

The project features audio and video oral histories of LGBTQ immigrants living in Brooklyn and New York City. Though each history is unique, they all touch on themes of family, love, gender identity, race and, of course, the immigrant experience.

Aaron C. Morris, Executive Director of Immigration Equality said: “Blatant racism and xenophobia have been rampant during this election cycle. This project is a response to that grossly inaccurate depiction of this country."

“The New Americans Project shares the true personal stories of queer immigrants from around the world building a life in the U.S," he continued. "The participants are teachers, community organizers and advocates. They are truly inspiring members of our community.”

“The LGBTQ New Americans Project is an antidote to the hateful, one dimensional rhetoric we’re hearing these days," remarked Floyd Rumohr, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Community Pride Center.

“The inaugural stories of seven immigrants live online for all to hear—connecting us as people."
