Photographer Captures The Diversity—And Beauty—Of The LGBT Spectrum

iO Tillett Wright is taking portraits of 10,000 LGBT Americans in all 50 states.

iO Tillett Wright has been exploring gender and sexuality since childhood, and the non-binary artist is now turning that passion and curiosity into stunning photographic works of art.

Wright has spent the last six years traveling to all 50 states in order to photograph 10,000 people who identify anywhere on the LGBT spectrum.

In an interview for the PBS series "Brief But Spectacular," the activist revealed that people from an older generation strongly identified with their labels because they had to fight so hard for them, but the younger generation is a little more "fluid on a spectrum of things."

"I think that the most dignified gift you can give them as a human, as part of their family or their family of friends, is the right to change," iO said.

Despite spending a lifetime being comfortable with not conforming, the artist still learned some things throughout the project.

"If you look into the eyes of a person that you discriminate against or you think is so different than you that they deserve less rights than you, it becomes almost impossible to deny their humanity," Wright said. "The complicated part of that is, I’m not trying to say we are all the same. What I’m trying to say is, we are all completely different, and that’s the beauty of it."

iO’s memoir, Darling Days, is available now, and you can check out more photos from the selfevidentproject here.
