The American Library Association released its annual report of the books that were challenged or banned the most often across the country last year, and the top contenders all seem to have one thing in common—LGBT-themed content.

The top five books on the list all feature LGBT stories or characters, with the rest of the top ten all containing sexual content of some kind.

Coming in at number one on the list is Mariko Tamaki's This One Summer, which was challenged because it includes LGBT characters and drug use, and was considered sexually explicit with mature themes.

Other queer-themed titles topping the list include David Levithan's Two Boys Kissing and I Am Jazz, the children's book by 16-year-old transgender reality star Jazz Jennings.

An ALA challenge usually means that there was a request made to remove a book from a library or from a school's curriculum, but members of the group report that simply asking for a book to be banned is not enough to make it happen.

“Most threats are unsuccessful thanks to the teachers, librarians, authors and even kids who rise up against censorship in libraries," the ALA said in a statement, adding that "each request to remove a book eliminates the voices of storytellers and dismisses the needs of readers who find themselves in those pages.”
