Lick it Up, Baby: "Heathers The Musical" Coming To Off-Broadway

Campy 1990s goth-teen fare is all the rage right now: CBS is preparing to reboot Charmed, there's talk of a Beetlejuice sequel, and Neve Campbell just turned up at an anniversary screening of The Craft. Now comes word that a musical based on Heathers, the quintessential dark comedy about high school, will make its off-Broadway debut this spring.

Yes, technically Heathers hit theaters in 1989, but given how influential it was (We're looking at you, Mean Girls), we're gonna round it up. For those of you who don't know what we're talking about (and shame on you!) here's a little back story:

September, 1989. Westerberg High is terrorized by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio.

But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place -- six feet under. Deliciously, darkly funny, romantic and moving, Heathers: The Musical is a truthful, uplifting parable for anyone who's ever been in love, in trouble, or in high school.

The new stage adaptation has some good pedigree behind it, including a book, music, and lyrics by Tony nominee Laurence O'Keefe (Legally Blonde) and Emmy winner Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives). Director Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness) who helmed a sold-out run in Los Angeles is on board for the New York run, which kicks off March 17 at New World Stages.
