Lifetime Releases First Trailer For Whitney Houston TV Movie

An extended trailer for Lifetime’s Angela Bassett-directed Whitney Houston biopic, Whitney, has premiered on Buzzfeed, and while it probably won't knock Roots off its pedestal, the TV movie looks a lot deeper and classier than the channel's efforts with Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.

The minute-long preview alone covers Whitney's rise to superstardom, her marriage to Bobby Brown (and its demise), substance abuse problems, and more.

No one would accuse star YaYa DaCosta (The Butler, America's Top Model) of being a dead ringer for the "I Will Always Love You" singer, but she's got the general look and mannerisms, and some pretty impressive acting chops. Plus Deborah Cox nails it simulating Whitney's singing voice.

This one could be a winner.

Whitney premieres Saturday, January 17, at 8pm on Lifetime.
