Like Shopping? Ever Been to an Amish Country Mud Sale?

The Pennsylvania Dutch, the Amish, the Plain People ... these descriptors all mean something to Americans. They're our horse-and-buggy cousins who live simple lives (except when they go buckwild during Rumspringa), churning butter and building barns by hand and eschewing modern technology. That being said, they have a Twitter account.

The groups living in the area are co-opting their lifestyle to tourism purposes, which is fabulous for us modern types that want hand-sewn quilts and pickles made with a 200-year-old recipe. City folk are now also encouraged to attend mud sales, a tradition named after the muddy ground created by 100s of people walking around in a tiny space, bidding on anything from shrubberies to wagons to bales of hay. (Think of the design possibilities for your weekend home!) (I'm not really even kidding!)

Visitors can stay on a working farm, and contribute to chores as much or as little as they like. There are events all throughout the spring and summer: Memorial Day weekend this year will host The Great PA Flavorfest. As long as there are more flavors to Pennsylvania than scrapple, we're there.
