Lilly Wachowski Has A “Ta-Da” Moment At The GLAAD Media Awards

The co-creator of "Sense8" explained how the stars aligned for her to come out as trans.

Fresh off revealing that she was transgender last month, Lilly Wachowski accepted the award for Outstanding Drama Series for Sense8 during Saturday’s GLAAD Media Awards.

The event was Wachowski’s first public appearance since coming out, and when she arrived at the microphone to accept the award, she simply said, “Ta-da!”

She then declared that “a sudden synchronism of time and space” brought her to this moment where she was being honored by the LGBT community at the same time that she went public about transitioning.

She thanked “the fabulous people at GLAAD” for helping her to come out, before sarcastically adding, “as well as the extremely sensitive and courteous people at The Daily Mail.”

She continued with a very moving speech that declared that “the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love.”

“Love is a crucial thing for transgender people, it’s a tether,” Wachowski said. “While creativity can soar beyond our seemingly immutable biological gender designations, when faced with a rather simple proposition of whether or not we are lovable, our imagination falters.”
