Since its launch last year, Elska magazine has explored the culture—and men—of various major cities around the world.

The latest issue is devoted to the homens of Lisbon, Portugal. Fifteen gay men are profiled in naturalistic photos taken on the street or in their homes, accompanied by a story about their life in the capital city.

"The Lisbon men at first were a bit reserved but, at the same time, easy-going," Elska publisher Liam Campbell told us. "On the one hand guys were very willing to shoot, but once we were together it took time to break the ice and relax in front of the camera."

Once they got comfortable, though, Campbell's subjects—found on Grindr, Scruff, Instagram and other apps and platforms, really loosened up.

"Street shoots turned into the occasional nude shoot and I also ended up with dinner invitations," he says.

He also revealed that the men in Lisbon have a lot of civic pride.

"When I'd be photographing them, if they thought the background scene wasn't 'pretty enough,' they'd suggest going somewhere more picturesque. I'd rather show the true Lisbon though, warts and all, but they worried about making bad impressions to foreign readers."

No bad impressions here, gentlemen.
