LISTEN: HAIM Could Be THE Future Of Lady Rock

The band HAIM has released exactly three songs, or about 12 minutes of music, but that's all I need to hear. These women are major. I can absolutely imagine them as the future of alternative rock.

A trio of young sisters from California, HAIM draws from a thousand sources at once. Their song "Go Slow" makes me think of lush New Wave ballads from the 80s, like something the Eurythmics would have recorded. "Better Off," meanwhile, drops in heavy drums, salty language, and complicated harmonies, like some crazy fusion of Florence + The Machine and Prince. And then there's "Forever," their official single, which mixes a gurgling electro beat, sunny guitars, and a chorus with rapid-fire lyrics.

And on top of all that, there's Danielle Haim's rich, soothing voice, which makes all these songs seem chilled out. I don't know if you remember the 80s group Swing Out Sister, but that band's singer, Corinne Drewery, has a similar, soothing quality in her voice.

Anyway: All of these influences make sense. According to the few articles I can find about HAIM, they come from a musical family, spent time in a classic rock cover band with their parents, and eventually did things like go to music school and perform with Cee-Lo. Somewhere in there, they planted the seeds for their exciting mixture of sounds.

I'm really excited that I discovered HAIM at this moment in their careers (thanks for the tip, Kate!). They're obviously up to something cool, and I want to pay attention. At the moment, their music is available on iTunes, and they've got a website and a Facebook page. Let's all pay attention together!
