Little Caesars Cashier Fired for Writing "Gay" on Two Men's Receipt

They weren't even a gay couple, just two cousins!

A possible instance of anti-gay discrimination has cost one Little Caesars employee their job.

On Friday, February 15, Rosman Harris and Marcus Robertson went to a Little Caesars location in Henrico County, Virginia, where they claim an employee wrote the word "gay" in place of a customer's name on their receipt. The pair told WTVR that they placed their order, left the restaurant for 15 minutes, and noticed the word when they returned to pick up their pizza.

Though Harris and Robertson both identify as gay, they're cousins, not a couple—and they definitely didn't mention their sexual orientations while ordering pizza.

"I was baffled," Harris told WTVR, "and it made me semi-angry because I feel like it's 2019 and we're still having to deal with this. It was this preconceived notion of, 'Oh, these are gay men.' So, why would you write that on the ticket?"

Harris and Robertson asked the cashier's manager for explanation as to why "gay" was written on their receipt. They didn't receive an answer, and later that weekend, another relative informed them that the same cashier was still working at the location. (The cashier reportedly said Harris and Robertson were being overly "loud" and "rude" in the restaurant, though Robertson is hearing impaired and was only "being loud" so he could hear himself speak.)

By Monday, both men learned that the cashier had be fired, despite the manager's earlier claims that they were too short-staffed to let them go.

In a statement to WTVR, Tina Orozco, director of communications for Little Caesars' corporate team, said the incident was "highly unusual": "Little Caesars maintains a zero-tolerance policy against any violations of professional conduct... The franchise owner took immediate action to investigate this matter and has terminated the employment of the individual involved in the incident."
