Lizzo, Megan Rapinoe Are Among "Time" Magazine's People of the Year

The chart-topping singer and World Cup-winning footballer are in good company, too.

Time has unveiled its 2019 Person of the Year feature, and the honorees are good as hell.

On Wednesday, the magazine officially crowned "Truth Hurts" songstress and body-positive activist Lizzo its Entertainer of the Year, and the world-champion soccer players of the U.S. Women's National Team—including out co-captain Megan Rapinoe—its Athlete of the Year.

Though Lizzo has been making music for years, the R&B singer and proud ally to the LGBTQ community truly catapulted into the public eye in 2019, with hit songs like "Juice" and "Good as Hell." Her 2019 album, Cuz I Love You, scored her accolades at the 2019 MTV VMAs and multiple noms at the 2020 Grammys.

"I’ve been doing positive music for a long-ass time," the 31-year-old artist told Time. "Then the culture changed. There were a lot of things that weren’t popular but existed, like body positivity, which at first was a form of protest for fat bodies and black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing. Now I’ve seen it reach the mainstream. Suddenly I’m mainstream!"

Rapinoe and her teammates have had quite the year, too: This summer, the footballers emerged victorious at the 2019 World Cup, with Rapinoe serving as their de facto spokesperson. The out athlete became a household name in the U.S., wowing soccer fans and queer people alike with her charisma, advocacy for equal pay in sports, and undeniable talent on the soccer field.

"It was like, 'Wow,'” Rapinoe told the magazine, recalling those first few days after her team took home the coveted World Cup trophy. “We’re in a movement, not a moment.”

Curious as to who scored Time's official Person of the Year designation? Teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg got the magazine's top honor.
