The Log Cabin Republicans Are Having Their 40th Anniversary Gala At A Trump Hotel
In the wake of Donald Trump's incendiary press conference this week—in which he equated neo-Nazis and counter-protestors—a raft of nonprofit groups have canceled events at Trump hotels and resorts. Bucking that trend, though, is the Log Cabin Republicans, whose 40th anniversary gala is slated for the Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C., next month.
“The Trump Hotel gave us a very competitive deal,” LCR president Gregory T. Angelo told The Wrap.
The group booked the venue back in March, long before Charlottesville erupted in violence—and before the president declared a ban on transgender service members in the U.S. military.
Angelo said there had been "some discussion" internally about moving the gala to a new hotel, "but with barely a month until the event and every prime hotel booked, a change of venue would be impractical.”
He added that the choice of accommodation shouldn't be seen as any endorsement of the president.
“We are not making a point of showcasing the venue, and we were never going to. If this event was promoted as ‘A Celebration of Trump’ or featured him as a speaker, criticism of Log Cabin Republicans would be more than warranted, but that’s not the reality.”
Ticket sales for the gala have been brisk, Angelo insisted. “We’re already at more than two-thirds capacity—the fastest buy rate I have seen.”
During the election, the LCR declined to endorse Trump, the first time the group didn't back the Republican candidate for president.
