Meet the Logo30: David Yi

"Pride is all about letting it go," says the author and beauty journalist.

Every day during the month of June, we will be spotlighting our 2021 Logo30. This powerful series profiles ordinary and extraordinary people who show pride in unique and provocative ways. Visit the Logo30 homepage to view current and past honorees.

David Yi is more than just a pretty face.

A veteran beauty journalist and proud queer Korean American, Yi is the founder and editor-in-chief of Very Good Light, the ultimate online destination for beauty content beyond the gender binary. His writing can now be found at bookstores near you, too, with his new book Pretty Boys: Legendary Icons Who Redefined Beauty (and How to Glow Up, Too) hitting shelves today (June 22).

According to its description, Pretty Boys is an illustrated history and guide that teaches readers how "self-care, wellness, and feeling beautiful transcends time, boundaries, and binaries — and that pretty boys can change the world."

Asked what Pride means to him, Yi tells Logo that Pride is "freedom, celebration, and being authentic. And I think Pride is all about letting it go, every day of the year, every second of every moment, and just being yourself."

Yi's favorite Pride memory dates back to 2012, two years after he first moved to Brooklyn, New York. Yi visited the Stonewall Inn to pay respect to the activists who came before him and made Pride possible. But during this past year, he has expressed his Pride by "being loud and forthright and authentic and empowered in my Korean American heritage, and just being free to be who I want to be."
