"Pride is about being brave," says the trailblazing Pennsylvania state representative.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta has had a busy past couple of years, to say the least.

After quitting his day job to run for office in 2018, Kenyatta made history when he became the first Black gay man elected to a state office in Pennsylvania, winning the 181st District in Philadelphia with more than 95% of the total vote.

As if being a newly elected member of Pennsylvania's House of Representatives weren't enough, Kenyatta proposed to his boyfriend, Dr. Matthew Miller, last summer. Their adorable engagement photos went viral on Twitter. Earlier this year, he also announced that he is running for the United States Senate in 2022. If he wins, Kenyatta will become the first Black and first openly gay senator from Pennsylvania in U.S. history.

Pride Month is one of Kenyatta's favorite times of the year because "it is a reminder of how powerful and transformational it is when we are just ourselves, fully and unapologetically ourselves," he tells Logo. "When we see each ourselves and allow the world to see us, so many beautiful things can happen, and that's what Pride reminds me of."

"Pride is about being brave," he adds. "Every Pride, I think of the shoulders of whom we stand, particularly those Black trans women at Stonewall, and all across the country, who stood up to be brave. That bravery inspired an entire movement, a movement that endures today."
