This Pride, Rebecca Black is ready to be unapologetically herself.
The social media star and singer-songwriter of “Friday” fame came out as queer in 2020. This January, she solidified her status a hyper-pop artist to watch with “Girlfriend,” her infectiously catchy bop about…well, getting back together with her ex-girlfriend. Now, she’s blessing the world with her new EP Rebecca Black Was Here, out today (June 16).

As someone who has come of age on the internet, Black knows firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate social media. But the out singer also believes that social media is “a really important tool” for LGBTQ people around the world. “It is really on each of us who can feel comfortable and empowered to do so to do our research, educate ourselves, continue to educate ourselves, and then share resources,” she tells Logo.
Black is doing her part, too. This month, she has teamed up with Planned Parenthood for its “Be Seen” campaign, which sheds light on how the organization’s sexual and reproductive health services are inextricable from all social issues.
As for her Pride ’21 anthem? “’Girlfriend’ by Rebecca Black,” she jokes. “No shame! I love that song so much because it really was a door-opener for me, to feel like I could really write the music that I’d always been wanting to make and speak in an honest way.”
