As of the first of the year, trans Americans will be able to enlist in all branches of the Armed Forces. Trump's ban has been swatted down by federal courts, so unless the White House seeks an emergency Supreme Court intervention (don't jinx it), America will be a little more equal come 2018.

Enlistment will be open to transgender Americans on January 1, 2018.

Lauren and Amy are the first gay couple to be legally married in Australia, after same-sex marriage was legalised on 9 December 2017. The women - who have been engaged for two years - had originally planned on having a civil union, but were granted an exemption to the 30-day notice period to make their union legally binding under the new laws. It was a long and sometimes ugly fight, but Australians finally won the right to vote this year, after a massive public ballot and parliamentary vote.

There is a 30-day waiting period after requesting a marriage license, so the official date same-sex couples can begin tying the knot is January 8, 2018. Some couples have gotten special permission to marry early, but that's gonna be a beautiful day to behold.

This year could also bring marriage equality to Austria, Taiwan and beyond.

Marriage equality begins in Australia on January 8, 2018.

From the moment—the very moment—Donald Trump won the presidency, we've been laser-focused on the 2018 midterm elections. Whether he stays in the White House till 2020 or not, Trump's agenda will be seriously hampered if Democrats can win either or both houses of Congress.

Illinois enacts its ban on the "gay panic" defense.

In June, Illinois lawmakers passed a ban on the use of the so-called "gay panic" defense in court.

California is the only other state to enact such a ban, which also covers "trans panic."

Using the gay-panic defense is no guarantee you'll get off, of course, but an Illinois jury acquitted Joseph Biedermann of first-degree murder in 2009 after he stabbed his neighbor 61 times. (Biedermann claimed the man made unwanted sexual advances and he was only defending himself.)

"At the heart of gay and trans panic defenses is the idea that individuals who do not conform to gender norms are abnormal and should be feared,” wrote Anthony Michael Kreis, who helped draft the legislation. “They reinforce outdated notions that LGBT persons are mentally ill and predatory [and] that violence against LGBT people is excusable."

The gay-panic defense ban takes effect January 1.

Whether it's the next Dreamgirls or the next Glitter, we're gonna eat every minute of it up with a spoon.
