Lorde's Touching David Bowie Tribute Had The Brit Awards Audience On Its Feet

Bowie once called the "Royals" singer "the future of music."

There were a lot of stars at the Brit Awards, but no one shined brighter than Lorde, who performed a jaw-dropping tribute to the late David Bowie.

The "Royals" singer stunned the audience with a passionate cover of "Life on Mars," and by the end, everyone was on their feet, applauding the young Grammy winner, who was visibly moved. Her performance was moving but still understated—it's clear she understood this was not the time for a diva turn.

Lorde was an apt choice for the tribute: Bowie himself once refered to her as "the future of music."

Bowie's son Duncan Jones, who criticized Lady Gaga's Grammys tribute, praised Lorde's as "beautiful."

There were others who also felt that Lorde succeeded where Gaga did not.

The show also featured a medley of Bowie hits, performed by his longstanding band, including "Rebel Rebel" and "Let's Dance."

"For me, it's almost impossible to mention Bowie's name in the past tense," said Annie Lennox, who joined Gary Oldman in introducing the medley. "Everything he represented as an artist was, and always will be, vital and incredibly present."
