Louis C.K. Wants You To Watch This Documentary About An LGBT Street Gang

"It was an amazing emotional ride," says the comic, who is streaming "Check It" on his website.

Louis C.K. might seem like an unlikely cheerleader for a documentary about a queer street gang, but he's doing just that: The comic has uploaded Check It on his website for streaming.

The acclaimed film, directed by Dana Flor and Toby Oppenheimer, chronicles the D.C. gang, Check It, that has rallied together for protection and support.

C.K. saw the film with its producer, Steve Buscemi, last year when it premiered at Tribeca.

"[It] knocked me right over," he wrote on his blog. "It was an amazing emotional ride. It was funny and moving, I learned a lot and it gave me a lot to think about after."

He's emphatic about bringing the unexpected offering to his fans, who may not have Check It on their radar.

"When I saw this film, I knew that no one I know will ever see it," he writes. "So that’s why I asked Steve, and Wren Arthur, who produced the film, if I could host Check It on my site so that lots of people can see it who may not have had it put in front of them."

Check It

The themes of the doc are both universal and specific to young queer people of color living in one of the worst parts of D.C.: Check It has nearly 200 members, most of whom make money “committing crimes like petty theft, robbery, and carjacking,” according to Flor. They're trying to turn things around—to turn away from violence and crime—but it’s not easy.

The kids, mostly gender-nonconforming, are full of charm, style, and humor, despite suffering homelessness, violence—even mothers telling them they're "slow," "retarded" or a "faggy ass bitch."

Explains C.K.,"I think the more people see each other, the more people get each other. And that's a positive thing."

You can watch Check It on LouisCK.net for $5.
