Lucille Ball On Gay Rights: “How Can You Knock It?”

Happy Birthday, Lucy!

Today, August 6 would have been Lucille Ball’s 105th birthday.

Ball was a film and television legend starring in Hollywood musicals like Best Foot Forward and becoming a household name worldwide with her classic sitcom I Love Lucy that ran from 1951 to 1957.

The comedy queen passed away in 1989, but in 1980 she did a very personal interview with People where she talked about everything from her divorce to drug use and LGBT rights:

How do you feel about gay rights?

[Gay rights are] perfectly all right with me. Some of the most gifted people I’ve ever met
or read about are homosexual. How can you knock it?

This answer is pretty normal these days but back in 1980 it was very progressive. We have always loved Lucy and she has always loved us. To celebrate our favorite redhead here is the classic Vitameatavegamin scene from the I Love Lucy episode, “Lucy Does A TV Commercial”:

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
