School Rejects Free Chick-fil-A Lunch “Out of Respect” for LGBTQ Staff

The principal says the chain doesn't pair well with his high school's "culture of kindness and community."

One New Orleans school has no desire to "eat mor chikin."

Dr. Steven Corbett, principal of Lusher High School, recently turned down a free Chick-fil-A lunch offered to teachers due to the fried chicken chain's continued donations to anti-LGBTQ organizations, WWL reports.

"Out of respect to our LGBTQ staff, we have chosen to not serve Chick-fil-A at an employee lunch," Corbett said in a statement. "The #1 rule at Lusher is to 'Be Kind' and we live this motto every day. Chick-fil-A has been politically outspoken about its views, and we feel it is not part of Lusher’s culture of kindness and community."

The free lunch was offered to Orleans Parish schools by the College Football Playoff Foundation to thank the community for hosting the Sugar Bowl and College Football Championship. CFPF representative Tony Fay, who said he understands and respects Corbett's decision, promised that the foundation would bring the teachers lunch from another restaurant.

Chick-fil-A chairman and CEO Dan Cathy famously spoke out against marriage equality in 2012 and admitted that he backed anti-marriage equality initiatives. According to the Christian-owned company's tax filings, Chick-fil-A gave $1.8 million in 2017 to three groups with anti-LGBTQ records, contradicting previous claims from execs that they would decrease problematic donations.

A number of airports and universities in recent years have fought to ban the eatery because of the company's anti-LGBTQ donations and values. Responding to San Antonio banning the chain from its airport, conservative Christian group Texas Values declared a “Save Chick-fil-A Day” in support of two anti-LGBTQ bills.

Last month LGBTQ advocates and allies protested Chick-fil-A's first international retail location in Toronto.

Chick-fil-A is set to become the third-largest fast food chain in the U.S., behind only Starbucks and McDonald's.
