The season five premiere of Mad Men this past Sunday answered questions that have tormented fans for an ungodly 18 months. Did Don and Megan tie the knot? Does Roger know that Joan’s baby is his? And will Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce ever come face-to-face with the Civil Rights Movement that has been slowly brewing all this time?
While the answers to those questions were quickly and kindly revealed, there is another set of questions that desperately needs answering: what were those outfits? Now that we’re smack-dab in the middle of the sixties, a lot of, erm, experimentation is around the corner (pixie cuts, one-piece pantsuits, and mod dresses are so close, yet so far away). It’s clear (especially after some of the get-ups at Don’s surprise birthday party) that our protagonists are stuck in the awkward gap between 50s glamour and late 60s-70s chic. But Mad Men‘s absurdly strong influence over fashion has yet to wash over, so all the iffy looks you may have wrinkled your brow at can now be purchased and worn by everyone!
