When it was announced that Madonna would be performing a Prince tribute at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, more than a few people were skeptical, with some even launching a Change.org petition to protest the decision.

However, Madge proved the naysayers wrong with a poignant performance of the Prince classics “Nothing Compares 2 U” and "Purple Rain" at the awards show this past Sunday.

True, her voice sounds a bit thin and you can feel her reaching for a few of those higher notes, but she perfectly captures the gravity of the situation nonetheless, honoring her long-time friend with grace and simplicity.
