Magazine Ranks The 10 Most Trans-Friendly Colleges In America

College should be some of the best years of your life, but all too often students wind up at a school where they're not embraced. The chances of that occurring increase dramatically when you identify as transgender.

To address the issue, College Magazine released its first list of the top ten most trans-friendly campuses in the United States.

"Since campus essentially becomes a second home for most students," writes Julianne Spingler, "comfort and freedom of expression are huge factors in deciding where to attend school. Being transgender is not a choice, but your school is."

RankedNumber One, the University of Vermont is considered an LGBT "mecca"—covering trans-related medical expenses, offering gender-inclusive housing, allowing students to easily update their names and gender on IDs, class rosters and all university databases.  UVM also hosts an annual Translating Identity Conference which explores gender and trans-related topics.

“[Students] are bringing their authentic selves to leadership positions and creating safer spaces for others. LGBTQA students are RAs, orientation leaders, out athletes, and leaders in groups across campus,” said Becky Swem, outreach coordinator at the school's LGBTQA Center.
