On a visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week, Magic Johnson talked about his relationship with his son and offered advice to other parents with LGBT kids.
After discussing Johnson’s love for LA, Hillary Clinton and local politics, DeGeneres turned the conversation to the NBA icon’s openly gay son EJ, who came out publicly in 2013.
“Being an athlete and being who you are, I think you would have great advice for a parent to understand [what it means] when their child says, ’I’m gay,'” the talk show host said.
“Well, I think it’s all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become,” he began. “It’s all about loving them no matter who they are or what they decide to do.”
“When my son came out, I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents. We love him and EJ is amazing.”
He concluded: “You’ve got to support your child because there’s so many people who will try to discriminate against them, so they need you to support them. If you don’t support them, who will?”
