Stan and Olli, two male penguins at a zoo in Berlin, are getting an all-expenses paid trip to a new home after failing to mate with female penguins.
“They’re gay, as far as we know,” said zoo rep Christiane Reiss. “They never bred. And when it came to courtship, they only mated with one another.”
The pair were brought to the zoo in hopes they’d help breed more king penguins, but when it became apparent they only had eyes for each other, zookeepers sent Stan and Olli off to a zo in Hamburg, to live in a colony of male penguinsthat includes Juan and Carlos, another gay penguin couple.
Along with the new address comes new names—Stan and Olli are now known as Kalle and Grobi, a staffer told The Locale.
Though same-sex marriage has yet to be legalized in Germany, we’re happy that these two lovebirds are free to be themselves, and that their love story will have a happy ending.
