A British candy brand is tackling the realities of dating as a queer woman in its latest advert.
The ad, a 30-second spot for Mars Chocolates’ Maltesers candy, sees a group of four female friends chat about romance over some sweets. One character, a lesbian named Sarah, confesses that she hasn’t much luck dating. Her friends interrogate her playfully: “Is it because you’re a lesbian?”
“Is it because you’re a vegetarian?”
It’s not, she admits—turns out, her mundane professional life as an accountant is her downfall.
In no time, Sarah’s quick-witted friends offer their commentary: “Oh my God, that’s disgusting,” one says.
“Do your parents know?” jokes another. (They don’t, Sarah reveals with a laugh.)
Michele Oliver, vice president of marketing at Mars Chocolate, told Pink News that the clever spot is part of a brand-wide initiative to highlight to lived realities of underrepresented groups.
“The adverts recreate real-life situations faced by women from different groups in society who you don’t often see or hear from,” she said.
