Man Wielding Machete Wanted in Possible Anti-Gay D.C. Attack

Police are investigating the crime as an assault with a dangerous weapon and anti-gay motivation.

A man with a machete terrorized two men last week in the NoMa neighborhood of Washington, D.C., NBC Washington reports. Police are investigating the incident as a possible homophobic attack.

The victims told police they were walking along North Capitol Street NW when one said "fuck you" to the other. But the suspect, who was walking in the opposite direction, assumed the comment was directed toward him.

Wielding a machete, the suspect then chased the two men into the lobby of the Tyler House apartment complex and made "stabbing motions" at them. Surveillance video footage shows a man with a long knife running into the building, presumably speaking to someone, and running back out.

The crime, according to the police report, is being investigated as an assault with a dangerous weapon and anti-gay motivation.

Police are offering a reward of up to $1,000 to anyone who comes forward with information about the suspect or attack.

The FBI reported this week that anti-LGBTQ hate crimes are still on the rise in the U.S.
