Gays For Trump Join Rallies Nationwide

For gay Trump supporters, it's about putting party before personal politics.

On Saturday, hundreds descended on Washington, D.C. for a March for Trump rally at the Washington Monument, one of dozens such events across the country. Among those gathering in the nation's capitol was Pete Boykin, the North Carolina-based president of Gays for Trump, who announced his group's participation last week on Facebook.

Andre Soriano, a former contestant on Rihanna's Styled To Rock, was with him, flanked by singer Joy Villa, who made a splash wearing Soriano's "Make America Great Again" dress at the Grammys last month.

It's not clear how big Gays for Trump's presence was, though Boykin was still asking for donations to cover costs heading into the weekend. Complaining his speech was not fully heard, he recapped his speaking points on social media, focusing on the downfall of Milo Yiannopoulos, which he blamed on the liberal media and "gay zombies."

Boykin is a staunch Trump supporter, but he also is vocal defender of marriage equality and other LGBT issues. (He wears an HRC equality sticker on his "Make America Great Again" hat.) He's been able to carve out a modicum of support among Trump diehards by eschewing trans rights and putting party politics before his sexuality.

In his home state of North Carolina, though, Trump supporters carried the Confederate flags alongside Trump banners. “We’re gonna take our country back," attendee Cherie Francis told the Associated Press, "and we’re gonna establish borders and have legal immigration and law and order.”

Two demonstrators were arrested at a rally in Nashville, though it's not clear which side they were on. Police also arrested demonstrators at gatherings in Berkeley, California; Olympia, Washington; and elsewhere, as encounters between Trump boosters and counter-protestors turned violent.

Six protestors in St. Paul, Minnesota, were arrested on felony riot charges after lighting fireworks inside the state capitol building. The AP reports 400 people came to cheer the commander in chief in the Twin Cities.

“They love their country and they love what Donald Trump represents," said Jim Worthington, who organized a rally in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, "which is about making America first."
